Got questions?
We’ve answered the most common ones here.

We’ve made it simple. Trade instantly, schedule your procurement, and generate yield, all in one place.

Do I need to be a compliance entity to participate?

No. Initiativ is open to both compliance entities (industrial operators subject to the EU ETS) and financial participants (banks, trading firms, asset managers, hedge funds, carbon brokers). Any entity that meets our onboarding and KYC/KYB requirements and qualifies as a professional client under MiFID II can apply to become a member.

What products can I trade on Initiativ?

Initiativ offers trading in EU Allowances (EUAs) in both spot and derivatives form (futures & options). Our programmable exchange infrastructure is designed to support the full range of emissions rights products traded under the EU ETS, available from launch.

What's the minimum trade size?

Just 1 EUA, equivalent to 1 tonne of CO₂. Unlike traditional exchanges where the standard lot is 1,000 EUAs, Initiativ lets you trade at any size. This makes carbon markets accessible to a much broader range of participants, from large industrials managing precise compliance positions to smaller operators and new entrants who previously couldn't participate efficiently.

Does Initiativ offer tools for risk management or price alerts?

Yes. The platform includes real-time price monitoring, configurable alerts, and pre-trade risk controls. Our infrastructure is built for professional participants who need fast, reliable execution and robust position management, with API access available for automated trading and integration into existing risk systems.

Do I have security over my assets?

Yes. We and our clearing partners act as custodian but you retain full legal ownership of your assets. Your cash is safely kept in custody with our banking partner on a segregated account and is protected and guaranteed up to 100 k€ by the Fonds de Garantie des Dépôts et de Résolution (FGDR). Your emission allowances are also safely kept in the dedicated public European register and cannot be accessed by anyone besides us and our clearing partner.

Initiativ in brief

A simpler way to access the EU carbon market

Initiativ is building a carbon market exchange for professional participants. It brings market access, execution and position tools into one platform. The goal is to make EU Allowance trading easier for firms that manage compliance, client orders or carbon exposure.

What does Initiativ do?

The platform is designed to connect eligible members to the EU carbon market. Members can view prices, prepare orders and manage activity from one interface. This removes several manual steps that often sit between a trading decision and its execution.

Who is the platform for?

Industrial companies can plan allowance purchases around their compliance needs. Traders can follow prices and manage positions. Brokers can execute counterparty orders in one place. Access is intended for professional participants that complete the required onboarding checks.

What can members trade?

Initiativ is designed to support EU Allowances, or EUAs, in spot and derivative form, including futures and options. The planned minimum order is 1 EUA. That gives firms a way to match a trade more closely to the size and timing of their actual need.

Why use a dedicated platform?

Carbon teams need clear prices, reliable execution and useful controls. A dedicated platform can keep those tasks in one workflow. It can also help a firm schedule procurement, monitor exposure and connect its own systems through an API.

How does access work?

An applicant must complete KYC or KYB checks and qualify as a professional client under MiFID II. Eligible firms can then apply for membership. The onboarding process is designed to support regulated market access and clear account ownership.

Where can I learn more?

The product pages explain the workflows for traders, corporates and brokers. The newsroom covers EU ETS rules, allowances and market structure. You can also book a call with the team to discuss access, onboarding or integration needs.

Regulatory note: Initiativ is currently seeking licensing with the ACPR and does not offer live trading at this stage.

Illustrative market workflow

From allowance need to market follow-up

A carbon market workflow links a business need to a controlled order and a clear record. The exact route depends on the participant, product and internal policy.

  1. 1

    Plan

Define the EUA amount, timing and purpose. Check the compliance plan or client instruction.

  2. 2

    Review

Confirm account access, limits and order details before the trade reaches the market.

  3. 3

    Execute

Send the order through the approved route and record the price, size and counterparty.

  4. 4

    Monitor

Track the position, settlement and next action. Keep the record aligned with internal controls.

Illustrative workflow only. Product access and live trading remain subject to eligibility, onboarding and Initiativ obtaining the required ACPR licence.
